Why I'm Learning Spanish

I've wanted to learn Spanish for a long time. I'm half Puerto Rican, but didn't grow up in a Spanish speaking household, so never learned.

My whole life I experienced the following:

Person speaks to me in Spanish

Me: "Sorry, I don't speak Spanish"

Person: "Oh really? But you look hispanic, what are you?"

Me: "I'm Puerto Rican"

Person: "What!?!? Then you should know Spanish"

Me: "You're right, sorry my Spanish speaking father abandoned me when I was a baby"

Ok ok, I never said that last part 😂. That's just my dark humor coming out, but this exchange happened hundreds of times to me throughout my adolescence, to the point I felt resentful of not knowing Spanish, and didn't want to learn it.

So many years later I realize it's a part of myself I really want to connect with.
